Best Time to Visit the Lofoten Islands

Weather in the Lofoten Islands is famously changeable, and daylight swings from the midnight sun to the polar night across the year — here's when to go, and when to think twice.

Best: September – November (autumn)

The Northern Lights season resumes in September, autumn colours appear on the islands, and rorbuer cost less than during the summer peak — though wind and rain pick up as the season moves toward the polar night in December.

Second choice: April – May (spring)

Snow still caps the peaks and aurora chances continue into early April, days lengthen fast toward the midnight sun in late May, and both crowds and prices stay below the summer peak — but the weather remains changeable.

Think twice: July – August

Midnight sun and the mildest temperatures of the year make this the busiest and most expensive stretch — rorbuer and rental cars book out — and it is the one period with no darkness for the Northern Lights.
