Things to do in Bodø

Bodø is the southern gateway to the Lofoten islands, sitting on the mainland coast of Nordland with its own airport and the ferry terminal for the crossing to Moskenes, a trip of roughly three to four hours. Many visitors pass through on their way in or out of the archipelago rather than staying long.

Twenty minutes from the centre lies the Saltstraumen, a narrow strait where tidal currents run in and out of a fjord system. The city sits north of the Arctic Circle, so the same seasonal light applies here as further north in Lofoten: near-continuous daylight in summer, longer darkness in winter, and a window for the northern lights between September and April.

Bodø's role is mostly practical — a place to arrange transport, stock up, or break a journey between the mainland and the islands.
